A little more info

Join Tafara Chakanetsa and Denise Rowe for a day exploring songs from the Shona mbira tradition, many of which are regularly sung in mbira ceremonies.

Tafara will share the words, melodies and polyrhythms of the songs, as well as their histories and the deep layers of meaning they carry.

These songs are storytellers, carrying histories, wisdom, memory and proverbs. Some reach back through generations, some carry stories and experiences of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, while others have been written more recently. Some invite reflection, others celebrate and give thanks.

At the same time, these songs are joyous to sing. They belong to a ceremonial tradition in which music, dance and song bring people together, with an understanding that some healing can only happen in community. They are songs made to be sung together ~ to lift our spirits and our prayers amid the complexities of life.
